Over the past decade, we have seen firsthand the explosion of direct-to-consumer brands displacing legacy brands in eyewear, mattresses, dresses razors, and beyond. Direct-to-Consumer brands can drive tremendous leverage through a customer- and product-centric mindset combined with a smart omni-channel acquisition strategy and the near-infinite reach of online channels like Facebook and Pinterest.
Our thesis at FirstMark is to find these products (often hidden in plain sight!) that are superior to legacy offerings in terms of value, quality, experience, or all of the above, and to back the exceptional visionary, thoughtful and analytical founders behind them.
To that end, we’re excited to announce our investment in Hubble Contacts. We led a $16.5 MM Series A with enthusiastic participation from a strong syndicate of existing investors.
Hubble offers subscription daily disposable contact lenses for half the price of traditional dailies. They do this through a flattened supply chain and efficient distribution model that ships a monthly supply of contacts directly to your mailbox. Dailies are the most hygienic and healthiest option for contact lens wearers, but are more expensive than monthlies and other reusable lenses. By offering dailies at the same price as monthlies, Hubble allows consumers to skip the age-old choice between overpaying for their eye health and over-wearing contacts for their financial health.
As with any of our investments, a huge reason for our conviction is the strength of the Co-Founders and Co-CEOs, Ben Cogan and Jesse Horwitz. Ben earned his stripes running customer insights at Harry’s, another direct-to-consumer subscription success story, and Jesse brings a wealth of analytical rigor from the investing world at Columbia University’s investment fund and Bridgewater. The company has also assembled an all-star team of advisors including experts from the manufacturing and business worlds.
