The venture business is, ultimately, all about people. Just like a startup, a VC firm is only as good as its team and network of advisors, partners and friends. At FirstMark, we’ve worked hard from day one at building and cultivating an extended family of trusted parties who we can learn from, and potentially work with one day.

In this talented FirstMark family, Beth Ferreira was always a clear standout. Both a successful investor and a great operator who has scaled large companies, Beth profoundly impressed us with her thoughtfulness, leadership and guidance to entrepreneurs. However, the opportunity to work together more closely never quite lined up…until now.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce Beth Ferreira joins FirstMark as our newest Managing Director.

Beth joins us at a transformational time, for both FirstMark and our hometown, New York City. As a number of our early investments (Pinterest, Shopify, Riot Games, InVision, etc.) have now reached tremendous size and reach, FirstMark has also started to scale, becoming the largest early stage NYC venture firm in terms of active assets under management and bringing on new partner Catherine Ulrich. Meanwhile, the New York tech ecosystem, very unproven when we first started FirstMark close to a decade ago, is now reaching early maturity, with ever-increasing levels of talent, investment and startup activity. More than ever, we believe there is a tremendous opportunity to build an incredible, long-lasting venture franchise based in New York, helping startups in all locations reach transformative scale through a combination of hands-on partnering, relentless support and privileged access to the Fortune 1000 network which is so well represented in New York.

Against this backdrop, we believe Beth is the perfect addition to our growing partnership:

Beth is an experienced investor. Initially working with our friends at Flatiron Partners early in her career, Beth later went on to become the founding managing partner at WME Ventures, with a stint as venture partner at FirstMark in between. At WME Ventures, she built a venture firm from the ground up, investing in companies such as Glossier, Masterclass, Ollie, Daily Harvest and Gusto.

She brings deep operational expertise. Beth is one of the rare leaders who knows how to build companies to significant scale, working in the trenches from the earliest startup stages. Leading finance & operations as an early employee at Etsy, she played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a marquee brand and global e-commerce platform during a period of hyper-growth.

Joining Fab as Chief Operating Officer only four months after the company launched, Beth led the strategic expansion of global operations and customer service infrastructure. The team she built is now dispersed across the New York ecosystem and beyond, in key executive roles and as founders of some of the most creative businesses.

She’s a sought after startup advisor. We know Beth as someone with deep expertise, who develops bonds with extraordinary entrepreneurs and guides people and organizations to achieve their best. She is one of the most sought after advisors in NYC and beyond, and is loved by the entrepreneurs she works with. Beth has worked with companies such as Birchbox and Coupang on everything from organizational structure to scaling warehouse operations. She will be a tremendous asset to our portfolio companies and to any of the boards she joins.

She’s deeply connected to the New York tech ecosystem. Beth is a community builder with deep relationships across VC, corporate and entrepreneurs in New York, very much echoing our own DNA as a firm. At FirstMark, we are passionate believers in the future of NYC tech, and have been very active in growing New York’s startup community as we’ve built our firm, from early efforts to support the first few incubators in the city, to more recently building a large, free event series to educate and inspire the NYC community.

We have accomplished a lot at FirstMark in just under a decade, but we believe we are still in the early innings and in many ways, just getting started.

A friend and venture partner of FirstMark from our earliest days, Beth knows us well and knows where we’re headed. Beth will push our thinking, help us make sharper decisions and be valuable partners to the entrepreneurs we back. Most importantly, we believe she will be an incredible investor.
